Sportsbooks price them quickly off season-long usage, which leaves edges for bettors who track the details: who actually takes the first shot of games, how each player performs when their team wins or loses the tip, and which play types teams run on their opening possession.
The opening tip is the biggest single factor — winning it roughly doubles a team's chance of scoring first. That is why our model projects each center's tip-win rate and evaluates every starter's first basket rate separately for tip-won and tip-lost scenarios. Pace, Q1 scoring share, and first-shot rate fill out the projection, which we then compare against live WNBA odds to find the biggest gaps between model probability and market price.
Because prices are long (+500 and up), even strong picks lose more often than they win. Treat first basket props as a volume market: consistent small edges, disciplined staking, and line shopping across books. Our EV calculator shows what a given edge is worth per bet.
A first basket prop is a bet on which player scores the first field goal of the game. Because any of the ten starters can plausibly score first, prices are long — usually +500 to +1500 — which makes finding true probability edges especially valuable.
Our model projects each starter's first basket probability from their historical first basket rate, first-shot rate, Q1 scoring, team pace, tip-off win projection, and play-type profile — then compares that probability to the sportsbook's implied odds.
