A goal is a shot that goes in, so start with shots. Players who put four or more pucks on net a night score far more often than their reputations suggest, and players riding a high shooting percentage on few shots cool off. Our chance for each skater comes from his shot rate, his ice time and a shooting percentage pulled toward the league rate, adjusted for how many goals his team is expected to score tonight.
Anytime goal odds carry a big margin, and it varies by book: the same player can be +180 at one sportsbook and +230 at another. Always take the best number. Even the most likely scorer on a slate misses more often than he hits, so treat goal scorers as a volume market with small, consistent stakes. What is an anytime goal scorer bet?
It wins if the player scores at least one goal in regulation or overtime (shootout goals do not count at most books). Prices run from about +100 for elite snipers to +1000 and beyond for depth defensemen.
How do you pick NHL goal scorers?
We project each skater's goals from his shots per 60 minutes, his shooting percentage (shrunk toward the league rate so a hot streak does not dominate), his expected ice time and his team's implied goals tonight, then blend that with the market's price. The chance shown is that blend.
Why does ice time matter so much?
Goals follow shots and shots follow minutes. A top-six forward on the first power-play unit can play 20+ minutes; a fourth-liner plays 10. Recent ice time is often the first sign a player has moved up the lineup before the price catches up.
